MASTHEAD RESEARCH

This masthead is for the popular music magazine, NME. The lettering is bold, due to both the bright colours, the large font size and the sharp corners; this is done to suggest the magazines loud, boisterous attitudetowards the music, and the hard-hitting style of the magazine and its content. The name, “new musical express” is very basically stating the magazines purpose by use of word choice, “new” showing you that it is a very up to the moment magazine, “musical” stating clearly what the magazine is about, and “express” showing the fast-paced qualities of the magazines content and its approach. The typography of the “new musical express” suggests, in the same way as the “NME” a hard-hitting, no nonsense method of approach to music. The colour scheme of the masthead represents a passion for the music that the magazine shares with its readers.

This masthead is for the R and B magazine Black Beat. The colours for this masthead change week to week, reflecting the artist of the week. The sizing of the word 'beat' and the use of capitals represents the importance of beats and rhythm in Hip hop/ RnB music. The incorporation of the word 'black' into the B of the word 'Beat' represents the black cultures strong intergration and involvement in the RnB genre and in this magazine.
This masthead is for the long running rock and roll magazine Rolling Stone. This magazine was first started in 1967, a time where rock and roll was at its prime and artist like Beatles, Beach Boys and Elvis were in the limelight, so in many ways, this text reflects the time which the the magazine was introduced as the text is decedant and extravagant. The red used in the inside of the letters represents a passion that the readers have for Rock and roll, but also at the time of the magazines release, Rock and Roll was seen as a very wild and crazy scene due to it's associations with partying, drugs and sex, and the red lettering reflects that as it sudggests a wild and dangerous lifeatyle that is expected from rock and roll listeners.
